Haley walked toward the mouth of the alleyway, pulling her coat closer. She looked around licking her dry lips. She knew she shouldn't be here, a girl from the other side of the tracks alone. She couldn't help it though. Every year no matter what she had to come and every time she was disappointed. This year she was sure would be no different.
She sat on a porch step, her eyes filled with weary hope and a bit of sadness, the size of a sparrows eye. She watched the people pass her by, rushing to get last minuet shopping done - little toy soldiers marching by, eyes straight ahead not noticing the lonely lady on the steps. She watched the snow fall softly, gently numbing her. She welcomed the snow. It wasn't snowing that night so long ago, but she remembered wishing it would, as she stared into the sky bumping into the stranger. That was the start as he shyly helped her gather her shopping bags. He invited her to coffee and she excepted. That was the start, she began to return to the alley to meet with him every Monday, she learned all she could of him. He was a musician, played guitar. his name was Ethan. Haley fell in love with Ethan and they were happy, until l he moved far away a year after they met. They promised to here every year on the day they met. Ethan had came every year for awhile, until all contact stopped. Haley couldn't understand why. He never answered the phone when she called or returned her emails. She knew that she should give up hope, it's been five years, but she can't stand the loneliness gently pressing down on her, slowly strangling her. So now every year she waits just like she promised. BOOM! Haley jumps at the sound of a church bell ringing midnight, bringing her back to the present. She sighed shifting her weight on the cold unforgiving cement. When she scanned the crowd once more, her breath caught in her throat as she saw someone who looked like Ethan. She ran up to him feeling as if maybe it was him, maybe her memories had failed her or he had changed slightly over time.
"Ethan!" she shouted the man had spotted her, so she bent over trying to catch her breath and calm her heart. The man had finally come close enough for her to get a better look. Haley felt her eyes fill with tears, this was not Ethan, here was yet another year of the bitter disappointment.
"Do you know Ethan? Are you Haley?" The man asked, his eyes widening
"Yes...Who are you and what happened to Ethan to make him stop visiting?" She was wary now, what if something happened, Ethan was dead? And how did this stranger know her name?
"My name is Joey and Ethan is my brother. He- "
"He had a brother? I never knew. Is he o.k?"
"Ethan is fine now, let me finish" Haley was about to interrupt again when he said this but held her tongue.
"He has been in a comma, after getting in a car accident. He woke up about six months, he lost his memories. "
"Wait you said he lost all his memories, does he remember me?" She was afraid to hear the answer. What if he had forgotten her?
"He doesn't exactly. He found a picture of you in his guitar case when he woke up. He remembered that you were important and he was getting flashes of memories of you. Finally about a month ago he remembered a name." So Ethan was alive, and could only remember she was important. Oh well she could work with that. She knew that she would go with this man who was Ethan's brother and everything would work out.
"I know this is hard to take in would you like to see a picture of him?" Joey reached for his wallet, the picture was of him playing the guitar for the first time since he woke up.
"Sounded as nails on a chalkboard but after a few hours his body took over. I have to go now, a business meeting tomorrow, but if you get a chance here is his new address stop in if you can." Joey then turned and left a very shocked Haley. She sat there in silence, listening to faraway police sirens and the people still rushing, not as much, but still toy-soliders oblivious to the small miracles happening all around.
Yes, Haley thought to herself, I will go to the nearest airport and go to him. I will not wait another year. The lonliness had left and she was filled with happiness and a few bits of anxiety, little pinpricks stabbing into her. He didn't remember her after all. He would though, this she knew, she would bump into him on the sidewalk again one day and he would remember. As she walked home she left the dark alley that had always been her path, tonight she walked home following the street lamp lined road.
1.) is the ending o.k? I know its open but does it work as an ending?

I think the ending is fantastic, Skit. It is open, but not to open if that makes sence. It has just the right about of open-ness.
ReplyDeleteI love it ^.^
